New Look for MSU's Electric Tram: Free Rides for New Students! Convenient Transport for Classes and Reduced Travel Costs
Mahasarakham University (MSU) has unveiled a revamped, energy-efficient electric tram with vibrant colors, offering free rides to help students save on travel expenses. Comfortable and with minimal wait times, the trams operate every 10-15 minutes with three trams looping around MSU's Khamriang Campus, with designated stops near academic buildings.
MSU has committed to becoming a Green University in alignment with the global UI GreenMetric ranking by promoting energy-saving initiatives. This includes replacing personal vehicles with public transportation on campus, such as electric trams, to ease campus traffic and enhance transportation safety for students, faculty, and staff.
Starting in 2016, this initiative has aimed to improve campus traffic systems, reduce accidents, cut energy usage, and further the university’s environmental goals as a leading institution in Asia.
The newly upgraded electric tram service runs weekdays with varying schedules:
7:00 - 9:00 am: Every 10 minutes
9:00 am - 3:00 pm: Every 15 minutes
3:00 - 5:00 pm: Every 10 minutes
5:00 - 8:00 pm: Every 15 minutes
On weekends, holidays, and during semester breaks, service is from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with trams departing every 15 minutes.
The tram route begins near Kud Rang Dormitory, passing key locations like the Central Service Plaza, various faculty buildings, and the Kantroewichai Market, covering a total of 22 stops.
Mr. Kittiphon Boonkamon, a senior from the Faculty of Information Technology, shared, “I live off-campus and usually ride my motorcycle. Now I park it at my faculty and use the tram to get to other buildings or the market. With 22 stops, it’s super convenient, reduces accident risk, saves fuel, and most importantly, it’s free!”
MSU invites all students, staff, and faculty to make use of the tram service, reducing car and motorcycle usage and promoting sustainable practices to advance MSU as a long-term Green University.
