On August 27, 2025, the Research Institute of Northeastern Art and Culture, Mahasarakham University, in collaboration with domestic and international partners, hosted the 5th International Academic Conference on Isan Literature in a Time Capsule under the theme:
\u201cCrisis to Innovation for Ancient Manuscript Heritage Conservation and Promotion in a Global Context.\u201d The event was held both onsite at the institute and online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening ceremony was presided over by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Prayook Srivilai, President of Mahasarakham University. Opening remarks were given by Mr. Lin Haoye, Director of the Confucius Institute, Mahasarakham University (Chinese Division), and Mr. Thom Gatewongsa, Director of the Research Institute of Northeastern Art and Culture, who presented the objectives of the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference aimed to serve as a platform for presenting both national and international research and academic work, allowing scholars, researchers, students, and the public to share knowledge and apply it toward academic advancement, cultural heritage preservation, and international academic collaboration. The goal is to elevate Asia\u2019s leadership in research to the global level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s conference welcomed leading academics and participants from various countries, including the United States, Philippines, Myanmar, People\u2019s Republic of China, France, Germany, Lao PDR, and Thailand. The program included keynote lectures, plenary sessions, academic discussions, and research presentations, offering a space for exchanging experiences, challenges, and innovations in ancient manuscript preservation. The hybrid format (in-person and online) helped broaden international engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening ceremony featured a cultural performance by Chinese students, followed by a keynote lecture titled
\u201cFrom Crisis to Creativity: Conserving and Promoting Ancient Document Heritage in China\u201d
by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Liu Peng from the Institute for the Preservation of Chinese Ancient Books, Fudan University, China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another major presentation was:
\u201cPreserving and Digitising Buddhist Manuscripts: Case Studies from the Buddhist Archives of Luang Prabang\u201d by Professor Dr. Volker Grabowsky, Director, Centre for Ancient Manuscripts, University of Hamburg, Germany, and Dr. Khamvone Boulyaphonh, Director, Buddhist Archives of Luang Prabang, Lao PDR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conference also included special lectures by international scholars from France, Germany, China, Laos, and Thailand, supported by institutions such as<\/p>\n\n\n\n
