Prof. Yottha Srithep, PhD<\/strong><br>Department of Manufacturing Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Mahasarakham University<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Research Background<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polylactide (PLA) is one of the most widely studied biodegradable polymers, derived from renewable resources such as corn and sugarcane. Its biodegradability, biocompatibility, and potential to replace petroleum-based plastics make PLA an attractive candidate for both <strong>environmental sustainability<\/strong> and <strong>biomedical innovations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Mahasarakham University, research on PLA focuses on improving its <strong>thermal stability, crystallization behavior, mechanical performance, and degradability<\/strong>, addressing the limitations that currently hinder its widespread applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Key Research Directions<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Stereocomplex PLA (SC-PLA):<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Blending poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) to form SC-PLA with higher melting temperature and improved mechanical properties.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Potential uses in high-temperature packaging and biomedical scaffolds.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>PLA Blends and Nanocomposites:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Introducing natural additives (e.g., epoxidized soybean oil, nanocellulose) to improve flexibility, toughness, and crystallization rate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing eco-friendly composites suitable for packaging and engineering applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Biomedical Applications:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scaffold design for bone tissue and regenerative medicine.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Surface modification and degradation studies for improved biocompatibility.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sustainability and Green Processing:<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Moving toward solvent-free processing methods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exploring recycling and circular economy pathways for PLA-based materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Broader Impacts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Environmental:<\/strong> Offering alternatives to petroleum plastics and reducing plastic waste.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Economic:<\/strong> Creating opportunities for bioplastic industries in Thailand and ASEAN.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Medical:<\/strong> Contributing to the development of advanced biomaterials for healthcare applications.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Future Outlook<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The research team aims to expand collaborations with international partners, focusing on <strong>eco-friendly and multifunctional PLA materials<\/strong>.
